The Democratic National Committee filed a lawsuit Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, accusing the Trump administration of using federal funds to produce and air political propaganda advertisements.
The complaint raises concerns for faith‑based readers about the proper stewardship of taxpayer money and the moral responsibility of government leaders to act with honesty and integrity.
According to the filing, President Donald Trump personally directed the campaign, the Office of Management and Budget transferred roughly $20 million, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection carried out the broadcasts. The ads began airing in September and are estimated to have cost about $12 million.
"This is Trump’s last‑ditch attempt to save Republicans in November," DNC Chair Ken Martin said, adding that Americans deserve better than having their hard‑earned tax dollars used for illegal schemes.
The White House argues the spots are informational, likening them to public‑service announcements about federal policies such as recent military actions in Venezuela.
The lawsuit asks the court to declare the advertisements illegal under the longstanding congressional ban on using appropriated funds for “publicity or propaganda purposes,” and seeks an injunction to stop further use of taxpayer dollars for the campaign.
The filing comes as the administration is also defending another lawsuit brought by media outlets challenging recent restrictions on White House access.
The court’s decision could shape how public funds are used in the lead‑up to the 2026 midterm elections and influence broader conversations about ethical governance.
