President Donald Trump announced a plan on Oct. 7, 2026 to convert part of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida into a new presidential retreat modeled after Camp David.
The development could give future presidents a secure venue for diplomatic meetings and foreign‑leader lodging, continuing a tradition of presidential retreats that have served as sites for high‑level negotiations.
Attorney Harvey Oyer drafted a proposal asking Palm Beach County, which owns the land beneath the club, to convey a parcel to the federal government while the remainder remains a private facility. Trump would fund construction of the residence and related facilities.
Management of the site would be handled by the General Services Administration and the Secret Service, and the plan would offer future presidents complimentary memberships to the private club.
County officials are reviewing the request. County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo said officials are taking the proposal seriously and are communicating with the federal government as they examine a potential parcel.
A White House spokesperson confirmed the federal government is looking into developing the course for “important meetings,” noting the property’s proximity to the Donald J. Trump International Airport, lack of nearby high‑rise buildings or homes, strong security features, and easy access to law enforcement.
The plan would not be completed before the current administration leaves office, meaning the retreat would be a “gift” to successors, Oyer told the Palm Beach Post. No cost estimate or specific site location has been released.
Camp David, built in the late 1930s and converted into a presidential retreat by Franklin D. Roosevelt, has hosted presidents and foreign leaders for decades. The proposed Palm Beach retreat seeks to join that lineage, offering a venue that could further cement the county as a recognizable destination.
The proposal remains preliminary, with multiple federal agencies needing to be consulted. County officials are expected to make a recommendation in the coming weeks as the discussion continues.
